Cardboard: good point. first one I did was cardboard, other three I used stiff black polythene (you've reminded me to redo the initial one).
Looking at your pics, I see a clear difference. I use single, unswitched, Australasian outlets. The face plate projects further off the wall and the rear assemblage is compact.
The outlet box in your left pic: I blanked off the bottom half with appropriate shaping so the face plate and attached cable, can with encouragement, be pushed/screwed into postion. I left a gap at the top to distribute sand in the residual space not occupied by cable and (much smaller) terminal block. I pushed as much sand in as poss - I was just able to reassemble (its a goood idea not to get sand in the bottom screw hole - threads don't like it).

John V,
Any Teflon tape straying into metal holes tends to cause nylon heads to break off their stems during tightening. Extracting those nylon stems can be sufficiently tricky to convert a tweaker back to brass on a bad day...

BTW my outlet boxes are metal, with maybe aluminium screws.
John V,
Sure. But you were referring to a screwing hazard and so was I. Incidentally there's no point in substituting brass for the stainless retaining screws that hold the box to the wall because there's no sonic advantage and the brass tends to bend under pressure there.
Previously found that wrapping 3M AB5100S around the internal ground wires of an amplifier improved the clarity and immediacy of the sound. Have just tested that wrapping the last 1.5" of the Romex ground wire with 3M AB5100S just before connection to the AC wall outlet further reveals the vibrance/ vitality of live performance in the recording.
