StereoJim said, "IIRC, this tweak was not just about mass loading. Magnetic BBs were chosen and put in small containers which were then placed above / below certain areas and moved about to see how that might affect the sound. While the weight of the BBs would certainly mass load the component, the point was to be able to place them in certain locations vs a single metal plate. The BBs were thought to interact with electro-magnetic fields, which a brick would not do."

I have no doubt that's what they attempted to quantify. But assuming this is true, it seems it would be rather difficult to separate the performance differentials between the damping and mass loading benefits inherent in this experiment and any supposed electro-magnetic field benefits.
This much I can tell you. If instead of using maybe 5 lbs. of BB-filled cardboard boxes, they used 50 or even 100 pounds of anything on top of that top plate, they'd cease caring about any electro-magnetic field effects.
Nevertheless, I think it's great to see them dabble with this topic. They're getting warmer.

You may be right, but I doubt I'll ever place 50 to 100 pounds of anything on the top of any of my audio components to find out.
Why is that, Jim? What components do you have?
