Forgive my ignorance in asking this question. What happens to the insolation when you dip the wire in the pot? (I am considering buying one, but I have never used one.)
Dave
It simply melts right off and is replaced by the solder in the pot (tinning the wires!).
It's kind of a cheat to do it this way; the insulation in melted solder smells bad, but after 32+ years around a soldering iron/soldering pot, it is no worse than the smell of solder to this Dman's nose!
I'm sure that in the long run, this can't be good for my lungs...

Thanks! That does look like the way to go with Litz wire. I can imagine that someone would want to strip it strand by strand.
Dave
but in my experience it was inefficient at stripping the enamel and left a gooey mess that was even more difficult to deal with, on very thin gauge Litz type phono wires. I went back to sand paper followed by manual tinning. Possibly solder pot works better on thicker wires.
for phono cables (cardas), i melt.a blob of solder on 700degree tip. dip cable end w.insulation on into external flux amd stick into molten solder to tin wire.

Get a solder pot, you will never have to strip a wire for tinning again.
