Many computer audio aficionados have long appreciated the sound quality that Audirvana Plus 1.0x has delivered by accessing the Mac OS engine at a deep level, providing the iZotope converter and offering interface simplicity.
Damien Plisson, its creator, has recently released the 2.0 version in a marked departure from its predecessor by uniquely accessing the database of iTunes without concurrently loading that application. So Audirvana Plus 2.0 finally tweaks out iTunes...
The improvement in dynamics brings the energetic level of attack right up to that of live music. There's a fully-featured 15-day trial version, then the purchase price is $74.00 for new users and $39.00 for registered licensees. Have no affiliation with the company other than of a delighted customer and also own both Amarra and Pure Music.

Isn't itunes music compressed? All songs, that I know of, are MP3.
Uncle Mike,
iTunes, like the the others, is a player of many formats including those that are compressed for convenience at the cost of quality. You can purchase tracks from many sites some of which are high resolution (SACD layers sold under license) but mostly Redbook tracks under varying levels of compression. I bought/ ripped CDs to start from uncompressed originals and have never regretted it although the recording quality of different Redbook CDs/ SACDs was/is difficult to discern in advance from listening to Amazon track samples.

How would you compare the three programs sonically and visually? What are the strengths and/or weaknesses of each?
Your thorough comments would be most appreciated.
Alan,
That's a job for a professional reviewer and not me.

Please just tell me what YOU preferred....that'll be fine.
Alan,
By accessing the Unix engine directly and eliminating the need for the iTunes player to be loaded, Damien Plisson of Audirvana Plus 2.0 has liberated his program's performance from the complexity and degradation of working through Apple's system and application software that continues to limit competitive products. The resulting improvement in dynamics is remarkable and A.P. retains the same good, neutral musical-tone, rock-solid dependability, straight-forward interface and the full range of features (except the ability to process and play Internet radio stations offered by Pure Music's plug-in).
To my ear and eye, Audirvana Plus 2.0 is therefore the standout winner at this time and my clear choice.
