some say that they last much longer. My experience is that they do, but it would be interesting to cut a section and view under a microscope to see if there are changes.
I have used old solder successfully myself. It is probably a relative thing. However, now I tend to work on very good equipment and it does not make sense to scrimp. I will stick with the manufacturers recommendation.
