Just curious to where you found the "black discus" to be most effective? I have 4 of the "free samples" and I'm still searching for da magic. On the other hand, his entry level powercord sounds excellent on the Classdaudio 254 in my HT/casual listening set-up.
Follow Ups:
I had the freebies too and while there was some minor change it was highly dependent on placement. But I used msa instructions for a power cord using these elements and the change was highly evident and positive. I bought one of his power cords... Bigger positive change. Look these items are ugly, look DIY in the worse way but they are highly effective and not expensive.
I had the freebies too and while there was some minor change it was highly dependent on placement.I couldn't hear any change using the freebies until I made them into a mains lead as per instruction. They then made a marked improvement in clarity. Others may disagree but I wouldn't bother with MSA devices for anything other than mains leads. For that, they are IMHO superb.
For a dramatic demonstration of what they can do, try three "kegs" on the lead to a TV set. I tried it pretty much as an experiment but they've stayed there ever since. The effect is one of better colour saturation and sharper focus. The latter gives the illusion of more depth to the image as the contrast between in-focus and out-of-focus areas of the display is increased.
I can't comment on Synergistic Research products as I can't afford them.

IMHO, and it is just that, a double set up of kegs on the incoming power line (two per leg) was more effective than the Shunyata Hydra. oh, and waaay....cheaper.
of course YMMV
I may be in the perfect position to reply to the question of Mad Discus versus Synergistic Research ECT. Firstly I spent a lot of time with an assortment of different size Mad Discus products at every recommended position. After many hours I only had two remaining. Two small discs on the front of the Marantz SACD player ( one on each side of the on off button). Every other place there was a sense of signal subtraction and a loss of music emotion.
The Mad Discus organization were great to deal with and I received my refund without difficulty. It was an educational tweaking experience. It did remind me some days of trying to use the various Quartz crystals to improve a system. Lots of trial and error.
The Synergistic Research ECT devices are wonderfully effective and have really elevated both my speaker system and my dedicated headphone system. I had major improvement placing the ECT on the following: SACD player-on top of input fuse, A/C inlet plug, digital output circuits, D To A chip, and then on two of the IC chips. Tube amps- a total of three ECT between the tubes ( Art Audio PX-25 amp and Eddie Current Zana Deux amp). Interesting one tube uses transformers and the Zana Deux is non transformer amplifier.
I have put them in two Blue Ray DVD players- Sony and Samsung with major improvements in audio and video quality.
I did hear a change trying them on interconnects and power cords but in my system these locations were not an improvement.
There is a Synergistic Research YouTube discussing possible placement locations.
Currently: highend - electronics.com (Alfred Kainz) is selling three sets of five for the price of two sets- $598.00 with a 30 day money back trial.
The improvement in my system was well worth the cost.

Funny thing about the discs. They actually take time to "break in". My experience is minimum one hour sometimes two. The stronger the EMF field, (like transformers) the longer time needed. I find this puzzling for a passive edevice..
Still, prior to break in, the discs make your system sound like a horrible boom box or car stereo. Once broken in, they are marvelous in the reduction of the noise floor. If you move them to stronger EMF field, you will need additional break in time. I normally put a CD on repeat and do serious listening only after the second play.
as usual FWIW and YMMV
I experienced the same effect with the Mad Discus- the breaking in effect.I spent ALOT of time with the system on evaluating the discs. In all but one spot that I mentioned, the effect felt like a subtraction effect on the music.
The Synergistic Research ECT has an immediate effect that to me becomes stronger after a short time has passed. I did not hear a good then bad then good cycle. I found the SR product to be more beneficial in my two systems than the Discs or when using crystals. The SR effect is one of the harmonics being in better focus. At least that is the effect on me. I look forward to reading of other tweekers experience.
What are the kegs? You stacked a few freebies and stuck them to to the barrel of you tv's PC near the ie. inlet? Do you have a photo? A pic is worth a thousand words.

I never found the free samples to be a major change in the sound of my system no matter where I placed them but I do have 3 of there entry power chords and they did improve the sound of my system. They are a good buy at their reasonable price

MSA often does incrementally small changes but they add up. May not be applicable for everyone, but in my system they work superbly over vacuum tubes (I drill a 1/8 th inch hole to fit over small tubes). Output tubes benefit more.
Also place them over bell ends of transformers. Outputs benefit more than power.

I know I've read about putting MSD's over tubes (with a small hole drilled) before, but I've only just felt the desire to try it out and I have to say it's made a very definite improvement in my system.
I have put them over the tubes on my pre-amp (hand made by Turner Audio in Canberra, no one else has one, so comparisons are somewhat irrelevant).
There seems a small amount more bottom end extension and a degree more (and better) character in the mids and highs... one voice is more clearly differentiated from another not just in space but personality.
Small clues about the environment in which the music is recorded (ambiance) come across more effectively.
For such a simple thing to try this has been very worthwhile.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Glad you enjoyed it. I never mentioned it before but placing a second disc on top further improves sound (face to face)Enjoy....

In the past when I stacked two of them it was with both of them facing up one on top of the other. I'm going to have to try them face-to-face.
Thank you for the suggestion.

It might well be time to finally work out what I want to buy from Mad Scientist and not just make do with the freebies.
the double discs work best on the tube drivers in the amplifier and the output tube(s) in the preamp.
