After some serious listening, I have to admit it does lack depth. It has a very "flat" presentation. I am going to try and increase the cable size and use a good ALPS pot I got out of a high end stereo.
Otherwise I think it can work it tweaked properly.

It is possible that even if you don't need the gain, you still need a cathode follower. That is as little more tricky to DIY but not impossible. As active circuits go, they are simple in both tube and transistor.

An issue with passive pre-amps can be impedance matching- read Nelson Pass's comments regarding his B1 buffer/passive pre. I have one, and am very happy with it.
