I want to make an isolation platform using a butcher block. Two are available : birch and alder. Which one would be better for this application? It will sit on brass cones.

Leave the wooden boards for chopping up your meat and veg...try granite plinths (20mm thick is good) with sorbothane feet. Then use cones (Nordost Pulsar Points are excellent) between your components and the granite plinths.

I was very unpleased with even a 1.25" thick maple board (sucked the life out). I prefer a 3/4" Acacia board (much better). A more resonant wood plinth can be a good thing with proper footers, IMHO.

If you have a butchers' block on cones, that couples to the shelf below not isolates from it.
