What date do you think we should use as cut-off for Hip Joint purchase? I propose October 31st, 2004.Post preferred cut-off date and ESTIMATED quantity desired under this post.
Once I get consensus on a cut-off date and actual pricing information I will post a new thread here at Tweaker's Asylum.
At THAT time, on the NEW thread, post how many PIECES you want. A minimal SET presumably is 3 pieces. If you want one 3 piece SET indicate a quantity of 3 PIECES. It is important that we have a FIRM commitment from those that want to take advantage of this effort. Reneging on your commitment is SERIOUSLY frowned upon.
Remember;
ESTIMATE quantity on THIS thread (non-binding).
FIRM quantity commitment on NEW thread (binding).I expect all who participate in this offer to be equally responsible for any financial shortfall caused by the irresponsible among us. I am assuming this will not be an issue. If it is, I expect there would be other parties that would gladly purchase remaining sets. Shortfall will be calculated as follows;
( UNIT COST X PIECE COUNT ) / PARTICIPANTS
This issue will be settled prior to shipping order.
Based on a quote secured earlier by AA Inmate transmissionfluid, it would appear that we are looking at about $45 per 3 PIECE SET shipped to continental US. His best price appeared to be $12.75 per single piece. He stated that his quote did not include polishing. I don't know what this will add to the cost. I also requested a slight bevel on each of the outer edges. There should be savings on shipping multiple quantities.
PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY: Price does NOT include bearings. Perhaps we can get a group purchase going on bearings as well.
I will have a firm quote shortly. I would appreciate if others here would get independent quotes as well. I suggest we start at 150 pcs (50 sets), along with additional pricing at 60 unit increments up to 510 units (170 sets).
I am going to quote price per piece without shipping. Shipping costs WILL be extra.
I will get a sample from the machinist prior to ordering. This can be sent to Barry Diament for approval if he is willing.
I want to see this purchase happen and have taken matters into my own hands, if you find any of this objectionable, let me know. I just don't want to see this purchase lose any momentum.
All suggestions are welcome. I will be posting this offer on other audio boards per pburke's earlier suggestion on transmissionfluid's thread.
I would prefer someone else be the TREASURER.
IMPORTANT DISCLOSURE: The representative I am seeking a quote from is a very distant relative through marriage. My hope is that this will work in our favor. Speak now; or FOREVER hold your peace regarding any disagreement over this detail. They might not even be the lowest bidder.

IMHO, Barry's Hip Joint© deserves, (and so do you) the finest execution.
In other words, don't try to save a couple of bucks at the expense of accuracy. Your saving the bucks with the group buy!

One set (3 pieces) for me please. You may find that the cost per piece does not go up significantly, if at all, for additional runs. Assuming the machinist you're contacting will be using CNC, there should be a one-time charge of loading the specs into the software, and that charge should be absorbed by the initial GP.
I think you should consider making the cutoff date sooner - more like October 15th. First, I'm admittedly impatient! Second, and much more significantly, this would leave less time between when people make a comittment and when they need to pony up the $$, so less chance of headaches for you. In addition, if my above speculation about cost is correct, people who don't make the first deadline would still have a chance of buying some at a later date at similar cost (granted, someone else may need to organize a future effort, but at least the footwork of finding a shop and knowing the price is already done).
Thank you very much for taking this on. I know how much work organizing something like this can be, and your efforts are appreciated.

Hi Wellfed,"I will get a sample from the machinist prior to ordering. This can be sent to Barry Diament for approval if he is willing."
I'd be happy to look at either the prototype(s) or a good set of close-up photos of same.
Glad to see folks getting together on this.
So far, the specs have gone to Australia, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Norway, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland and all over the U.S.
Can you send me a pics?

Hi John,I used 2" stock because that is the dimensional relationship the design called for, relative to the height, the size of the "bowl" and the size of the ball (1/2").
Certainly smaller stock would cost less. Would it "do the same job"? I don't believe the results would sound the same.

BTW, do you have anyone you consider to be a good choice for machining these? Am I correct to assume a slight bevel on the outer edges is a good thing? Also can you direct me to your preferred source for bearings?
![]()
Hi Wellfed,The local machinist I used to make my Hip Joints a few years ago subsequently relocated out of state so sorry, I can't be of much help in that regard.
I think the bevel is a good idea. Mine have a slight bevel at the outer edge on the top side of the base.
I purchased 1/2" chrome steel balls from Small Parts.com (see link below). They also have tungsten carbide balls for those who want them.
Happy Listening!
Barry

If I am reading things correctly these would cost and extra $30+ per set over chrome steel. What are you impressions regarding their performance compared to chrome?
![]()
Hi Wellfed,No doubt, Tungsten Carbide outperforms Chrome steel. The expense becomes a consideration however, when you have every component in your system, including speakers and power conditioner, atop Hip Joints.
In my early posts, I noted how Hip Joints with Chrome steel outperformed the commercial roller bearings with Tungsten Carbide. When the Tungsten balls are used with the Hip Joints, there isn't even a contest. This has since been corroborated by other Hip Joints users who also compared them with the commercially available designs.
So, as the old saying goes: You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Count me in....*s*

I was going to put one together after the last one fell through (the person who posted pricing never returned to the forum). However, I am totally swamped right now and it may be a few weeks before I can focus on this and shop around for good prices. Myself and two friends alone would order 30 units, so the 100+ pricing is really what we should be looking at when comparing sources. If nothing significant materializes in October, I'll start looking for machine shops in my area and hopefully get things "rolling" for the holidays :)
Peter
...to solicit interest and firm up the quantities. Hopefully they will facilitate this. I am going to look for pricing today. Can I definitely count you in for 30 sets? I am going to do 10 sets for myself. So we're at 40 with just the two of us including your friends.
![]()
30 pieces it is.
![]()
make that thirty parts, not 30 sets.Machinists go by parts in the pricing, not by set. I suggest to keep the count in parts when asking for pricing, even though it makes little sense to have anything but multiples of 3 made.

...and have your friend quote qty of 50 and 100. I would think we could easily find enough interest for this quantity or more. I will get another quote myself.

The specs are in the form of a pdf and so will need to be sent as an attachment.
There will also be a pair of jpegs attached.
Hi Barry,
Would appreciate a copy. Thanks.

Are there prints for these somewhere?
I'd like to see them.
I'd suggest getting a "prototype" set made first.
Especially with an "unknown" machinist.
You can tell him the total order will follow based on your approval of the prototypes.
Excellent idea Barry! Any other thoughts you could share would be greatlly appreciated. I know you've been down this road before. The sets that I have purchased were from buys that were already in the works.

Hi Julien,Remember to emphasize how the "bowls" must be as smooth as possible.
Does any one have a good source, friend, family member, that could give us a good price. I think whoever does the footwork should get a set for their troubles. (I don't mean myself) Whatcha think?

Most vocational shops welcome small projects
as long as material is provided or paid for.
Turn around time might be slow however.Or....most offer night coures too. I knew one
gent that took a couple of years worth so he could get
shop time to make a scale train. Don't think the hj's
would be too hard to make.
