Thanks for the link. I've got a PAS3X pulled apart that I've been thinking what to do with. Also have my FM-3 that does okay but would like to update without going radical.
I can't speak for the FM-3 mods he sells, but you can do far better with the PAS than what he's offering.
The capacitance for the fillament supply should be increased far beyond what those small caps can offer. I replaced the selenium rectifier with diodes and increased the capacitance by about seven times the stock amount. It took the sound of the (otherwise) stock PAS beyond my Audio Research SP-3-A-1.
I'd look elsewhere for PAS upgrades. Email me if you have any questions (and no, I'm not selling anything).
With that much added capacitance did you have to change the transformer? I have a file of PAS mods offered for the PAS and one day will sit down and decide what I want to do. I'm actually leaning to the AVA SuperPAS. I had one of his "factory" built units for some years and then sold it. It was a very very good sounding unit and seemed not to have any impact on any amp it mated to. 1st preamp I can honestly say that about. As soon as it was out of the house, I knew I was going to regret the decision and I have ever since.
I did not. As a matter of fact, I recently posted on the Tube/DIY Asylum, saying I've had up to 1/4 farad (250,000 uF) on the filament supply of stock PAS transformer with never a problem. And I built it around 15 years ago.
I did the Vorhis mod (Last PAS, Audio Amateur), and I've been very happy with it. It's fared well in comparison to some other quality preamps I've put it up against. Have you got that mod in your folder? If so, take a close look at it!
Good luck.
