I my Yamaha T-1 in 1978 and have had no issues until now. Here goes.
The left channel will work properly (only static comes out of it now) only when I activate the mono switch on my Nakamichi 410 preamp. The right channel is fine. CDs and vinyl play as they should, as do my speakers.
So, the problem, I surmise, is either in the tuner itself or the tuner section of my preamp. Any ideas? Thanks.

Nice tuner but bettered by - as long as you only listen to FM - the T-2. So if they can't fix your T-1, maybe look out for a T2?

I let 2 T-2s go on ebay. I listen to only 1 station on my T-1, and infrequently at that. That said, the repair costs for my T-1 might exceed what those T-2s went for on ebay. We'll see, the repair techs haven't given me an invoice yet.
1. Turn off the power amp.
2. Swap the interconnect cable between right and left channels AT THE TUNER OUTPUT.
3. Turn the power amp back on and see whether the problem has switched channels.
4. If it has switched, the problem is the tuner.
5. If not, repeat the process but swap right and left AT THE PREAMP INPUT.
This is a good way to isolate problems. You could have a cable problem, or a problem with the input jacks on the preamp. When you switch the preamp to mono, it blends the silent and working channels so you hear output from both channels.
Never swap cables with power to the speakers! Good luck.
Thanks. The tuner is in transit to be repaired. I guess the shop will do what you suggest and more. In addition to the current problem, I'm sure it's way out of alignment.
Good. If you want to test your cables and the input jacks on your 410 while you are waiting, you can use a different source such as a CD player but connected to the "Tuner In" jacks on the 410.
I have a 430 and would love to own a 630. I like the looks of those classic Nakamichis! Good luck with your Yamaha tuner!
Thanks for the suggestions. Nakamichi made their name with the first 3-headed cassette deck. But, as you know, they offered some very high quality amps as well, under rated in my view.
