If you don't care about keeping a museum quality unit, you could install a better quality volume pot (like Alps, or supposedly even better sounding 250K PEC control, available from Digi Key). Then you add a mono / stereo switch to the back of the unit (if you don't want to drill the faceplate).
I've seen guys add them where the accessory AC outlet was. That way there's no drilling of the chassis, and you still have the mono switch for reception issues or alignment.
Follow Ups:
I'll probably (read; when I get off my lazy butt) replace the pot at some point; I already have a Stereo/Mono button on my preamp...
At the other end of the scale, I'll most likely need to replace the tuning cap as well- I understand that when it makes a lot of noise when being turned, it's time to replace (or I could again, get off my lazy butt and spray some contact cleaner on the bloody thing!)...

Tuning caps almost NEVER need replacement. Use caution. Canned clean air that is diffused will get rid of the dust. Be careful of the pressure, you do not want to chance bending the plates. I also use a NEW CLEAN very soft bristle brush. Getting any residue from things like contact cleaner will defined the cap. As for the static when turning the cap, look for the thin leaf springs that make contact with the main shaft. Very gently lict and clean the contact area and the shaft area where the leafs make contact. After you can use something like a tookpick to add conductive grease or other such as WD40. When doing this do not get any on Ny part of a plate. Sounds more difficult than it is.

I also read (via an older Van Alstine article) that the grease in the bearings is indeed as you mention (AND the contacts as you mentioned too!), and SHOULD alleviate the tuning noise.
Now I have to get off my lazy you-know-what!
BTW, how's the weather up there? I miss "The Big Smoke" dearly, but D-wife and I should be making the trek up there for the recently announced Rush tour dates this June...

We did not get hit like the East coast but have not see above freezing temps in some weeks. Did get some snow but does not look like the 10 -15 cm forecasted.

I don't believe you're supposed to use anything more than canned compressed air on the variable capacitor fins.
One thing I've always meant to do (read: another lazy ass here) is to clean the variable capacitor bearings, and repack them with conductive silver grease. I believe the late, great Bill Thomas gave details on this procedure on the Dynaco Doctor forum.
I read it somewhere...Too lazy to search. [insert annoying smiley thing here]
Good luck with your FM-3. What a lush, musical sound mine produces!
Very little to NO multipath in the way of the stations- FM here sounds incredible. Can't vouch for musical taste however, so I only listen to the two NPR stations (89.1 locally, and IIRC, 90.1 from a little farther out).
Point noted about the canned air. I'll JFGI regarding the article. Maybe between the adverts for cheap (insert any item here) and the know-it-alls, I might find it!

Yesterday got downstairs for a short time. Switch on the FM and nothing listenable. Everything destroyed by multipath. Hate aurora spellcheck.

The same ten rock songs on every station.... Kinda like a certain Classic Rock station (that starts with the letter Q) in T.O.!

A query please for Dman:
You mentioned an article by Sequerra on the FM-3, can you please post a link or reference? Here are some other FM-3 articles, courtesy of user nerdorama on Audiokarma:

Glass Audio 1/91 Impriving Dyna's FM-3 by James Lin

I have mentioned David Bernning, and his mods (particularly his recalculated PEC modules). My mentor did mention something to me many moons ago that Richard (dick) Sequerra did, but I can't recall if it was from a mag or where. Heck, my mentor might have even asked Dick directly, as he was quite chummy (as the "new kid" with the old guard (Klipsch, Hafler, Pearson, etc...)...
Wish I could help out more... I'll have to take a look when I get home (I am staying at a Holiday Inn Express, so maybe I'll feel smarter in the morning!)...
Cheers,

Thanks! I remember Berning being mentioned in the Audio Amateur or Glass Audio article. I think the FM-3 fanclub would be interested in any inputs from Sequerra.
Yes, indeed!
