There is a fellow on Ebay who is selling modification services for those tuners. One of his mods is to install two cooling fans. I checked his feedback, and his customers seem quite happy with his services. Just go the ebay and search for XDR-F1HD under consumer electronics.
For some reason, Sony pulled this model off the market despite rave reviews and good sales. I wonder if they had problems with them.

Thanks. Evidently the problem was solved once he connected an antenna to it. Without it no signal was received which caused the unit to shut down.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Crazy huh Mr. Bailey, sir. And of course you're right. You'll like this story. So I moved into my house in '98. Old house. Antenna on the roof. But back then I got my DirecTV and was all set. About 3 years ago got into vintage audio, and tuners. San Francisco, and the Bay Area, has some mighty good radio. But I was using only indoor antennas, and couldn't get much reception since I live in a hilly area. Reception, yes, but not like I heard about. Finally one day I had a brain storm and grabbed that flapping wire that banged against the house. Put it through a window and hooked it up to my Fisher 400 and VOILA!. Incredible super strong reception. Fisher's tuning eye, which usually only closed about 30%, now closed all the way on multiple stations. Great fidelity.
So point to the story is that yeah you can play around with this stuff, but if you want to get serious about radio you will need to do the roof antenna. As Mr Bailey has espoused many times over.
;-)!Been in SF, 1997, GHyatt top-floor, trying to get FM -'classical' off a Walkman.
I had one of that headphone company's "Traveller packs" too! With Etymotic headphones. and etc. ? Ask?
Thank God I wasn't paying for my baggage.
