Magnum Dynalab suggest that the Blend function on their MD108T operates on a variable basis- increasing blend as the stereo signal weakens and deactivating it in the or presence of good stereo reception. At least that is what I inferred from reading it. They suggest activating it at set up and selecting BW3- the widest IF setting. Does anyone have any thoughts on this approach? I've always avoided using blend on a tuner, wanting to go for maximum stereo separation even if there's been a bit of background hiss but M.D seem to suggest theirs will get out of the way by itself when it's not required?

on all the stations you care about, no?
Clean meaning i) multi-path free, and ii) as little processing / compression by the station as possible. For me there is - iii) very little such processing of the recordings.
Seems to me that needing a stereo-blend circuit is an indication you don't have enough antenna $$ invested in the radio reception system - as a whole.

Im referring to the MD instructions directing the user to engage blend by default, my reception is generally good ( especially now that I've pointed the antenna at a different transmitter). I register zero multipath and a strong signal and have never used the blend switch in the past. MD seem to suggest theirs is an intelligent function which will apply as much or as little as required...actually this is ringing a bell- Hitachi field processing on the FT 5500 mk II !
So, stop worrying about it / don't engage it.
