The 117 is working out okay so far. I've only listened to one distant station at this time. Later on I'll tune is some closer ones like CBC 2 and such. Nothing stands out on the tuner at this time yet.
T-117 should be a good all around performer. More selective tuners exist, but is usually a trade off for best sonics though. Only tuner I used that is good on fairly weak signals with good (not best) selectivity and great sonics is the Citation 18 with a simple capacitor upgrade. Still very good in stock form. Of course an outdoor directional antenna supercharges any tuner that does not have the best selectivity. Tube type tuners receive the most improvement.
I also never experienced an op-amp based audio section tuner to provide the best sonics, but my experience is limited. Also, I expect almost CD quality sonics on the right FM station and that is most difficult.
CD like sonics? Should be so since they use hard disc drives to store the digital files they play on the radio, and all taken from sattelite initially. Problem is the majority of stations compress the Hell out of the music, so there is little life left in it. Sounds like MP3s to me. I've heard some stations even use low bit rate MP3s for their music. No wonder people don't listen to the radio anymore. Its as bad as IPODs.
CD quality is already a compromise as my best source is vinyl. On the right FM station I get close to CD quality with the right tuner.
The only two non-tube type tuners that have achieved that performance is a Scott LT-112B and HK Citation 18. If the coupling caps are upgraded in either tuner the slight performance edge is icing on the cake.
I can also state I never found an audio op-amp based tuner to perform as well as a disrete output section no matter how many different op-amps I swap out. I figure it this way that even the best FM stations in stereo are already compromised and the tuner just cannot afford to be less than the best. I suspect I am more critical than most with regard to FM tuner sonic performance.
