Got the amp biased. No big deal.Since you all feel the maggies are a bad choice, what would you suggest? I really like the speed and accuracy of the maggies. You should also know I will rarely listen to mid to high volume levels.
At this point I don't really care to construct speakers, getting a professional quality finish is beyond my wookworking skills.
I rarely care for multi channel audio, there are exceptions.
Bill, you stated you sell tubes. Through whom?

Since you all feel the maggies are a bad choice, what would you suggest? What do think? That's the most important aspect and one that many blowhards tend to forget. I'm getting real sick of the kneejerk "maggies need gigawatts of power" MYTH. It really depends on the application. There's more than just a few exceptional cases where ~20 watt tube amps can sound really sweet on magneplanars. If *YOU* think they need more power (based on your own first-hand listening) then do more research and inquiries.
I owned a 302B and MMG's w/sub for quite awhile and I felt the sound, when in the sweet spot, was truly satisfying. The reason why I went to a different brand of speaker had more to do with placement issues than it did with overall sound quality and the non-existent "watt-sucking sensitivity."

Hey Thanks.Would you get the MMG's and then see about upgrading depending on how they work?

That's what I planned on doing several years ago. I just didn't bother to get the larger magneplanars. I'm sure you're aware of the MMG upgrade option along with the 60 day trial period. If you don't like the speakers then you're out the money for shipping which is roughly $30-$50. If this is something you can live with and you want to find things out for *yourself* then what's holding you back?

Maggies are great, but I agree with others... they need a considerable amount of power to really sing. I don't know what your budget is, but about two months ago I picked up a pair of the much-heralded Polk LSi-9's for my JoLida 502/302 setup. The LSi series are not found in mass-market Polk dealerships, only in specialty stores -- for good reason! They are extremely high quality, extremely musical, and very refined. If you want to spend more than $1-1.5K, you can look at ProAc's, which I also recommend. For digital, you can't beat the quality found in getting a decent external transport and seperate DAC. A used MSB LinkDAC III will cost around $250 or so, and you can trot down to Best Buy and pick up some 400-disc CD changer that has digital output. This will really do some amazing things and will perform as well as CD players costing ten times as much, in my opinion. Or, JoLida's new tube CD player is available and I hear it sounds marvelous.
As for interconnects, I like Kimber and IXOS. I use IXOS Ixotica's on my gear and IXOS Gamma 6003 speaker cable. Analysis+ makes some awesome cable, too, if you are interested in spending.
As far as upgrading the amp is concerned, if you are good with a soldering iron you can do some cool capacitor swaps. Otherwise, just stick with exchanging the tubes if you feel so inclined!
I run a small (recently created) JoLida and Antique Sound Labs forum. You're welcomed to stop by and read about the mods I've done on my amp. Check the URL below.
