Can anyone share your experience in rolling 5U4Gs. Do anyone know where to get Ken-rad V229?

Hi Nothing,Call Andy Bouwman at Vintage Tube Services.
Doc P
Tungsol 5U4G/VT244 top getter - the best all around, very sweet, great bass. Magical.Tungsol 5U4G bottom getter - runner up, not quite as good.
KenRad VT-244/5U4G bottom getter - great tube, good bass, nice highs.
Sylvania 5U4G/VT-244 bottom getter 1940's - good tube top to bottom.
RCA 5U4G - pretty much the same as the Sylvanias...
Raytheon VT-244 1940's small bottom getter - very nice warm tube, not the deepest bass, but very mellow quality.
Tungsol 5U4GB - excellent tube, warm with rocking bass, the best of the GB types, might even be better than any G type.
Sylvania 5931 - very cool good sounding tube, runner up to the Tungsol 5U4GB.
GEC U52 - overrated cold sounding tube, weak bass.
Mullard 5U4G 70's - also over-rated, the Mullard GZ37 sounds better as a 5U4G sub.
Dear Friends: I have had excellent results from the Tung-Sol 5U4G
top getter tube. The JAN-CHS series Sylvania 5U4GB military rated tube is a close second (top getter) Ken-Rad 5U4G is another good tube. Take care...Joe..aka the "Beam-Tube"
Thanks for the comment. Do you know where I can get a pair of Ken-rad VT244 or Tungsol top getter. What are the reasonable prices to get them?
Hi Robert,Are the %u4's interchangeable.
I am using a 5R4GY in my pre-amp power supply and heard that this is a better tube? Thanks
5U4G's and 5R4's have the same pin-out but are very different electrically.First, the 5U4G draws 3mA current rather than 2mA for the 5R4. Very few commercial products use a power supply that is over-spec'd enough to handle that.
Second, the voltage drop with a 5R4 is more than with a 5U4G. So subbing a 5U4G for a 5R4 will raise the plate voltage on your power tubes, and they will as a result sound different. But they may be running too hot as a result.
In general, yes, the 5U4G is a better sounding tube all other things being equal. But everything is not equal if you just swap one for the other in a power supply circuit that has not been modified.
If your equipment is designed for a 5R4 you should probably stick with it.
There are differences between 5R4 brands, the 1950's Chatham potato-masher is my favorite, also look for early RCA, KenRad 5R4GY's.
