In Reply to: Which is the best EL84, Telefunken, Amperex or Mullard? posted by Pre on May 12, 2001 at 12:20:43:
It depends on which Amperex and which Mullard.Assuming the Amperex is the early D-getter and Mullard is the Mullard 10M, then I still think the choice depends on taste and application.
BTW, you should add Tungsram to your list as it is most defintiely in the same league at the 3 famous brands you mentioned but much cheaper. And I will avoid any Mullard EL84 except the 10M series.
And if you can find them, the earliest genuine Lorenz EL84 from Germany is an amazing tube. So is the earliest Valvo.

Need 2 more to make a quad. Are they any good?
With these codes one should be able to tell who really made them.Generally spoken, Valvo in Hamburg was one of the Philips-owned valve manufactures, and produced very high quality valves. Though, often you would find valves from other Philips factories with Valvo logo - therefore my question for the code (Hint: Most "Valvo" EL34s I have seen were Mullard xf1/xf2/xf3s manufactured in Blackburn/UK).

To my knowledge, Valvo Germany, Amperex Holland and Mullard UK have never produced any E84L/7320.Siemens is the only producer but I have been told that there maybe a French version too.

Hello Tim!Indeed some Philips-owned French company produced E84Ls, as did Siemens and Tungsram for Siemens and others.
Valvo sold E84Ls of Philips production in the 1950ies and 1960ies - I have got some databooks from 1961 where Valvo have a full datasheet of the E84L whilst it was not mentioned in my Siemens databook of the same year - but it appeared in the 1962 and 1968 Siemens books. Philips had it in the 1958 databook as well...
This is the reason why I have asked for the code - to see where the valve came from...

I believe Valvo never made any E84L/7320 and what you have are probably made by Siemens instead.Tim
Hi Tim,How about Siemens E84L?
Erv
I ordered a matched quartet of Siemens EL84L and I didn't like the sound. Not well balanced -- hard upper mids and highs. Listened for a couple of hours -- and put them up for sale on ebay.WTS
I don't think they sound too good for EL84 application compare to the brands that were mentioned. But they probably sound great if you drive them harder than any EL84 can take.
