In Reply to: RE: Valvo 6201 What do I have? posted by Permanent Waves on December 23, 2016 at 13:02:06
It's a good tube. I've used a few in guitar and hi-fi amps. Phase inverter position would be very nice.
You have photo of it? Can you read the Philips etched manufacturer/date code at the bottom?

And another
That's the rarest of the already rare Valvo 6201s. It was produced in Hamburg indeed, in the mid to end 50s. The pinched waste was created intentionally, to reduce microphony. The third mica was added for the same purpose. A very special tube indeed!
I've been trying to obtain some but they go for ridiculous amounts these days when they pop up. I've never been able to audition one either, but I do like the regular 2 mica version a lot for it's neutral reproduction.
I don't know tour tester so can't comment on the scores. Let us know how it sounds in your application!
Another pic
Here are some pics of the tube. I purchased because it was so unique. I've seen lots of other Valvo 6201 with straight glass and gold pin and blue print. This one different with frame grid D getter not halo like others and triple mica and pinched glass I knew it was special. Do the test numbers I gave concern anyone? Does it seem to be testing used?

The 6201 is an industrial version of the 12AT7. As i recall the Blue Label Valvo, is designed for medical or high reliability 10,000 hour instrument use. I would have to dig mine out of storage but if they were not made in Holland i think they were made in Germany by Siemens. If Siemens they would have an "SH" which looks like an S with an = sign thru it. Excellent audio tube. Not quite an ECC801S more of an E81CC.
Also, I appreciate your input gentlemen thank you
if it has a printed white "D" in bottom between pins it is sure original VALVO/Hamburg made. my experience says that all pinched waist VALVOS (very early vintage types) were made by VALVO.the colours (green/yellow/red/blue) show the former distribution channels. the destiantion of yellow ones was german postal/broadcasting supply, green for calculators/computers, blue for avaiation an seafaring purposes and red for other common technical use.
a coloured VALVO is not a guarantee for perfect sound at all. i tried several blue 6201 types in phase converter position of my preamp and was disappointed from their performance. i found far better canditates (ECC81 made by RFT and Telefunken). sorry!
