I really love my Amperex 7308 white label tubes but I need something compatible with 12ax7 for my phono preamp. What would be the best choice?
Or is the Amperex 7308 a really unique tube with nothing else very similar?

Why not an Amperex 12AX7? A quick search on eBay turned up 220 results...
The 6dj8 types and the 12ax7 types have different pinouts and different operating conditions. In other words the circuits for each type are not really compatible with each other. You should check out the operating conditions for each tube.
He's looking for a 12ax7 for his phono stage that sounds like an Amperex 7308. The 7308 that he likes the sound of is in another component.

compared to commercial apples. they are both apples but the organic tastes way better. Ok, maybe not the best comparison but you catch my drift. The 2 types of tubes will not sound the same because one is hi mu, the 6922 is on the low side. One is grid wires wound around posts the other is fine grid wire wound around a frame. Different construction, different gain means different circuits, means different sounding.
There is a frame grid 12ax7. the ECC803, but that is nearly unobtainium, with a price that would probably be better put to a new preamp.
