I was interested in a set of EH EL34 but I keep reading about the EH 6ca7.

So IS the EH EL34 the same as it's EH 6ca7?????

Guitar players talk about 6ca7's as being "scooped" - that is, mids turned down, like a smiley face EQ. That's been my experience running them in a Dynaco ST70 with a dynamutt octal mod. A lot of folks like that sound, as it focuses more on bass, but I don't. It's like mids and upper mids are missing. Actually, EH EL34's sound really good to me - a lot of upper mid and high end detail, but bass is there too. My wife thinks they sound "scratchy". I guess it all depends on your gear, what you listen to, how well your ears work, and what you want to hear.
To further confuse the issue, there are KT77's, which to me, are kind of in between 6CA7's and EL34. They sound scooped also, but have more high end sparkle than 6CA7's. I haven't tried E34L's or JJ's EL34 II, but, reading between the lines, seems like they lean toward 6CA7 kind of sound.
Just today, a set of JJEL34's came from Tubedepot. I'm listening to them in the Dynaco now. They are pleasant, but definitely darker-sounding than EH's. They are supposed to be the brightest of JJ's EL34's. It will be interesting to compare them with EH EL34's once they are broken in.
Read something last night about using the output tube type your amp was designed for and am exploring changing feedback circuit to accommodate different types of tubes. The fun never ends...
The EH 6CA7's don't really sound like they have a mid scope to me but actually seem more to be linear where some el34's almost have a bit of a bump which can be great with the right speakers/music. The JJ KT77 sounded pretty good to me but like they were missing some low end. I can see how your wife describes the EH EL34 as being scratchy though. They have a lot of high end energy to em.
My guess on the guitar front is that some of em like the 6CA7's because they have more headroom and probably take preamp distortion better than EL34's. Same reason that some like 6550's over EL34's in the same amp.
It's fun to talk tubes. Please keep us up to date on how the JJEL34's turn out.
Looking forward towards your review of the EH EL34s. I'm using a VTA Dynaco ST-70 that can accommodate KT66, 77 and 88s. The Gold Lion 88s are truly special but there is also a magic to a good EL 34

You know, that's what I'm thinking too!
No, they are quite different and do not sound the same at all. The EL34 has a lively sound and will brighten up a system where the 6CA7's sounds more balanced and tight with a better low end. I much prefer the EH 6CA7's, but your experience may be different. It's actually my favorite to run in any stereo amp that takes el34's and has never let me down.

and you'll see that their EL34 is a thin-bottle pentode, and the 6CA7 is properly a beam tube. Not quite sure where that quote came from, but comparatively, the Russian 6CA7 is the new arrival.
