....placed them in my Icon Audio MB30SE Mono Blocks and apart from adjusting the volume on my preamp about 2dB's, I don't find them a great improvement over the Tung Sol KT120, the Tung Sol KT150's have about 4 hours on them, I hope they will sound better with more time, otherwise I think I will stick with the Tung Sol KT120, I also replaced the 5AR4 rectifier and Full Music 6SN7 tubes with current production Tung Sol.

Mike.

Pardon my rant here... but hasn't everybody figured out yet that the tube is only PART of the amp? And that different tubes perform differently in different circuits? The Icon Audio unit the original poster uses them in is a low or no NFB SE monoblock amp - of COURSE it will sound different than amps that use more NFB and are push-pull.
And what about all the other variables? The room, the speakers, the source components, the source material - and the listeners ears/preferences... they ALL affect these arbitrary judgments.
I mean no offense to anyone reading this. But we go through this same discussion here over and over and over ad nauseum...
End of rant.
There ya go again Jim. Clouding the issue with facts. When rumors and myths like some guy in the mid west that uses light bulbs instead of tubes is what we really want to hear. But only GE bulbs you know!
No really. I think most of the usual posters know that already. Just some polite agreeing going on here.
This is not my experience. I found the KT150 head and shoulders better than the KT120 in my two applications. They are:
Antique Sound Labs AQ-1001 DT
Yaqin MC100b
The quality of the bass was improved significantly. Top end was clearer, as well. Could be system dependent so on most any piece of gear it could be a different experience.
I'll buy your KT150's at the right price!

If you are not pushing the KT120 into clipping, you won't.
4 hours won't tell you anything...give them 50 at least before judgement. IMHO considerably better than the 120's. I would go KT88 before 120's. Just my 2 cents.
I have a set of Gold Lion KT-88s coming tomorrow!!!
I always enjoy trying new tubes.
You should change only one element at a time to analyze differences. There is also a break in period for tubes but not as much as caps or resistors.
I couldn't agree more. You should only change one variable at a time if you want to determine if something is problematic or not. I also emphatically agree that tubes must 'burn in' if you really want to hear what they will sound like for the majority of their service.
I also know from my own experience that certain circuits obviously respond to tube changes, and others simply do not. I wish all tube gear would invariably benefit from (upgrade) tube changes, because I have amassed a reasonable collection of many common audio tubes, mostly 'pre-amp' tubes. Perversely, when I had to change a great deal of my audio gear recently, I ended up using an amp I owned but rarely used, and it uses some tubes I have relatively few of. It does take 6SN7s to my delight, only to find that rolling it doesn't do a whole heck of a lot to the sound (IMHO).
