I learned fairly quickly that I liked Amperex 7316 replacement for the ECC82 or the 12AU7 whichever you prefer. My preference leans heavily towards the whit label tubes. All genuine 7316s I was informed must have the requisite code, including the right triangle meaning they're made at the Heerlen Holland Philips Plant.
Quite frankly I see a lot of tubes with 7316 haphazardly applied and the wrong codes.
The Orange Globe type Amperex even when coded correctly just don't float my proverbial boat. They don't have the upper extension and holographic effect I get out of the white tubes. \
Can anyone tell me why this might really/honestly be the case, or if it's just idiosyncratic to my ears.
BTW for you small tube rollers- the rare and elusive 7318 is said to be even better, but I have only seen one place offer them as good pulls for $200- Pair.
Follow Ups:
IME, these are later 1960-70s made tubes. Not quite as good as the chalky white labeled models. Esp early 1960s Bugle Boys.
Yes it is.
Almost invariably the orange paint feels like baked on enamel, which is impervious to audiophools such as myself who take the tubes out of their box periodically for comparisons and study -if you allow tube collectors and rollers to see the hobby in sort of an academic discipline. I only wish I knew enough to see things that way.
Beyond that permanent paint, is there any other known reason, structural or by employment of a different material, they may account for the sound difference I hear?
I really wonder if there are true 7316s in orange clothes. I am not sure.
This raises another question.
Does anybody have dead Chalk White or Orange model model that can donate its body to tube science. We would need a dead Orange model, as well for a comparison.
Thanks for information, thoughts and opinions on this topic.
