I understand the problem you're describing. I've used kilowatt-level ham radio gear back east in houses with no AC. The point is, unless you're in an extremely tiny room (like a closet), the difference between an ST-70 and a high quality amplifier with EL84s will be insignificant. The solution for a more comfortable environment is to either add BTUs/CFMs to your cooling system or move the audio gear out of the listening space.

was to rig up a clothes dryer exhaust tube on her Sherwood S5000. She has washer and dryer hookup, but goes to the club center where they have laundry machines.
What she did was install two boxer fans out of phase with each other, one at each end of the dryer exhaust tube. She then put the exhaust tube over the output tube section of the Sherwood, and then the other end to output exhaust hole where the dryer would hook up..She rigged up two rheostats, one on each fan so she could control the speed of them. The fan up by the tubes is pulling the heat away from the output tubes and the fan at the opposite end is blowing the heat out thru the dryer exhaust port. She was literally able to drop the temperature in the area the amp sits in by 14.2 degrees F and she said it is noticeable. You can go outside of her townhouse and put your hand by the exhaust port and feel the warm air blowing out. The only inconvenience is that the amp has to sit in the utility room along with her TT,CD player, and Ipad. The AR-LSTs sit in her living room.

I may look for a SS amp to get me through the Monsoon season. Something to hook up to my Conrad Johnson.
The efficiency rules apply equally to both tubes and SS. SS will have the advantage of not requiring heater power.
You might consider tracking down an original NAD 3020 that's in good condition. The phono section is respectable and the power section is the heftiest 20 WPC you'll ever find. A NAD 3020 will make pulses of 80 WPC into 4 ohm speakers. ;> ) FWIW, Feldman, Hirsch, and TAS all reviewed the original 3020 favorably. Talk about a long odds trifecta.

I have a NAD C275BEE solid state amp. However it also generates a considerable amount of heat.
I may look for a vintage Marantz 250 with meters.
So I may go the vintage amp route for something really cool to look at and use.
An old NAD 3020 is close to butt ugly. However, it "sings" beautifully. NAD spent their money on the inside, not cosmetics. The original 3020 is very much "a little engine that could".

I was in the audio business when NAD first became popular. Like you say, it's all on the inside. Sonics are near the top of the solid state heap. :)

That's pretty funny! Next time I move, I'm looking for a house with an entertainment exhaust port. :)
