There was a sale yesterday of a Citation II amp on eBay:HARMAN KARDON Citation II Stereo Tube Power Amplifier 6550 KT88 KT120 #131844552498
In the description my name was mentioned in this context:
"This amplifier has also had a proper Jim McShane capacitor replacement"
I had nothing to do with this whatsoever. I did not supply the parts, I did not/don't recommend the parts and/or techniques used, nor did I supply technical documentation or any other technical assistance to the builder. In fact, I don't recommend PC boards for power supplies (Sheldon Stokes does, so there is honest disagreement on this point), I don't recommend KT120 tubes for Cit II, and so on....
When I contacted him regarding this he replied that he would add a footnote to the description to correct any misconception. He did not do so despite multiple requests from me.
So if you see my name attached to an auction like that and you aren't sure it's legitimate - you may well be right. If you are considering a bid I'll be happy to take a quick look at the item and let you know if it's a "McShane" item or not. You should get what you pay for! And I felt people needed to know this sort of thing is going on and I've decided from here on to make an effort to stop it!

Could be worse. Like oh crap that amp was airtime-ized. Should be sold with a fire extinguisher.
Nice work Jim. Was surprised this sort of thing has not happened in the past. Almost anyone who is interested in a CIT II or V quickly runs across the McShane mod.
Guess it is too tempting for some sellers to make an extra buck to claim the unit they are selling has the upgrade kit.
Best
John
Thanks, I wondered about that one.
I assume you've complained to eBay about the use of your name? Not that they would care, eBay management has changed over the years from safeguarding the ethics of their business to simple auction pimps.

Buy Chinese. Bury freedom.
I didn't complain on this case because the auction closed before I could. But I definitely will in the future.
Thank you Jim for posting this. It is very important information. Who wants to purchase an item thinking that you did it. And it was done by some amature and they complained about it in a forum like this. That would drag your fine name through the mud.....
