In Reply to: RE: Used Genelex KT88 for this kind of money? posted by Michael Samra on June 13, 2016 at 17:27:00
I've never seen a Genalex KT-88 with a "Made in UK" label. All the ones I've seen (which isn't that many) had "Made in England" labels. And had dark brown micanol bases.
These don't look like the real things.

They actually say, made in UK or made in England.I have several that are sealed in the package with the data sheet that were given to me back in 1998 by a Ford engineer. They were used in chassis vibration testing machines and the seven he gave me were the left over spares. He also gave me 8 used ones from the old machines but they were arced over because they literally ran 770vdc on these tubes...I ended up keeping two of the used ones along with the seven new ones. Here are a few NOS ones I have that were just boxed NOS but don't have data sheets like the ones sealed in bags.
It doesn't make sense because I can tell you that these tubes do not sound as good as the reissues when it comes to liveliness and both are very close when it comes to detail. I think Jim McShane came up with the same conclusion later..We knew the KT90s were better but we weren't sure about the KT88s but after a 100 hours on the reissues, they really come to life.
The KT66 reissues are unequivocally as good as they original and even better in the sense that the bases no longer come loose.

Never really used the KT-88 in any of my amps. The GEC/MOV KT-66 is a wonderful tube. So, if modern ones get close or equal, that is good. The last amp I owned with the KT-66 tubes was a 1962 Marshall "Bluesbreaker."I should never have sold that amp. I either was going to keep that one or the blackface Fender Twin Reverb. My moniker answered that decision.
One day, I'd like to get an 18-watt or another 50-watt Marshall...
