I hope you have some unit that can use those tubes. I love using the 5692 and 5691 in Ampeg amps.
Crazy find!

My current main system doesn't use either of these, but I have a couple Audio Electronic pieces that do. I think the preamp uses a pair of SN7's and the phono stage a pair of SL7's, but it's been a while and I'll have to check. Probably time to fire them up with these tubes and see how they sing. Both were kits I built with upgraded parts -- PIO and Black Gate caps, Riken resistors, OHNO copper wire, gold plated sockets, etc. Used only the chassis and trannies from the factory kit. They sounded pretty darn good with run of the mill tubes. Now if only I could stumble on some "free" GEC or Tele KT-77's to put in the AE Super Amp... :)
The AE-3 pre amp assuming you stayed with the tube types they use for the kit and factory built units. They use 6SN7s in the pre and I must tell you the tube you choose has a very obvious effect on the sound you get. That's good and bad in my case.
The bad, I bought way too many used tubes which when used in the AE-3 expose every fault which for most is some degree of microphony. I agree with what Jim McShane has said about that, which is that if it is not inducing a feedbacvk loop and you don't tap your tubes like a drum set while playing many will be just fine.
The good I also have some really beautiful sounding tubes and this pre shows them off and demonstrates why some are truly special and or precious. I have a lot of Sylvania Ws and they sound really great in this pre. There are several others of course, but for the sake of brevity I will leave it at that.

My experience echoes yours in that the AE-3 sings with some tubes and sounds, well, not exactly with others. The AE phono stage is the same, but it is a superb MM phono stage with the right tubes.
Drug these out of the closet last night, but no time to play. Phono stage already has some Hytron's in it, so I'm thinking if I liked the plain old 6SN7GT's, I'm going to really like the 5692's. Nice little Amperex Holland 7316 in the back. Now if I could just find some nice output tubes for the Super Amp. The Rubys aren't bad, but I'm sure they don't hold a candle to some nice NOS gems. Need to start looking for some more furniture stores. :)
