"Then I tried some Gold Lion KT88's in place of the stock Shuguang KT88's, and those struck me as better in every parameter, along with a slightly fuller harmonic tone."
This was my experience in Phi200's as well.
"The problem was that both the Gold Lions and the CV181-Z's moved the system too far in the richer, fuller direction, so one of them had to go!"
I didn't try this combination, but that may be why I like the RCA 6SN7s in combination with the Gold Lion KT88s. The RCA's are a very clear, clean, accurate tube and only erring perhaps slightly toward rich-sounding, in my experience. The Gold Lion KT88's and RCA 6SN7's was a really good combination!
I also briefly tried the Psvane KT88-TII's in the Phi200's with the RCA 6SN7s. The combination was richer still than with the Gold Lions, and MAYBE not quite as detailed. I was still trying to decide whether the Psvanes moved the system too much toward "rich" when I traded in those amps for the 200iQ.

How would you characterize the difference in the amp from the basic amp?
And thanks for sharing your experiences with the RCA 6SN7's. I will have to get a quad to try.
Too early to tell. I only have 15-20 hrs on it so far and it sounds great for awhile and then just ok. I will try to report back later. I will say that it's going to have to be quite an amp to best the Phi200's. It's a superb amp once you get the tubes that suit your taste.
