It uses 6DJ8's and the last batch of tubes were Cryo'ed and I don't think I'll do that again. It may have contributed to shorter tube life IMO.Funny, how all of a sudden I notice that it sounds crummy and I'm thinking of selling off my entire music collection, etc.
XXXX on that. They are, of course, 6922. I guess I should pull them to see what they are: EH or JJ or Sovtek. Probably go with EH or JJ, so never mind, as I don't think NOS is on my list of worth buying ;-)
XXXX again. So I had Genalex Gold Lion E88CC in there. I recall replacing two of them relatively quickly with maybe EH as I thought they went noisy right away. I recall liking the sound of the Gold Lion, but don't think longevity is their suit.
Any recommendations? I think I paid $25 a tube last time, but don't exactly remember, but I am much more comfortable paying $15 a tube, for the four tubes that it has.
I'm thinking about solid state at this point, but once I see the prices, I'll fork over a $100 for new tubes!

I think one has to be a scientist and keep a log of which tubes were replaced and any sonic conclusions. I don't recall at all what kind of tubes I haved used in it.
However, user error as I had the MONO switch in, which is why I didn't like the sound!! Yes, I'm getting old.
Anyway, having two unique tube positions and, maybe, three brands of tubes available, gives you 3-squared, or nine combinations to try!
Put in some EH and took out some AEGs (Ha, probably counterfeit, who knows) and it is going back in service soon.
Had good results with some Reflektors in my Anthem Pre-1. Parts Connexion advertises these as pairs, well priced too.

I'be read that your pre can be hard on Tubes but if it is happening more frequently it just may be your tube sockets need a good cleaning. While you're in there, give those gain switches between the tubes a clean, and move them through their different positions a couple of times before setting them back to where you had them. That should benefit the pre regardless of what tubes you go with. Make sure your power us off and unplugged of course.
Cheers!
