My little Sherwood with it's EL84's is a VERY hard act to follow.
I agree the 84 is routinely overlooked for more powerful tubes.
Follow Ups:
They are great sounding tubes. You need to hear them in a single ended amp. In pentode mode they output 4 to 5 watts and even in a "lowly" rebuilt console amp, ala Magnavox, Zenith, RCA, etc, they will make you a believer of the SE magic. More people are realizing that for a very little cost, you can have a low power amp that is totally satisfying and even eye, or ear opening. cheers, Dak
I'm a long time fan of 6BQ5 SET 60s stereo console amps. I have several, and they amaze me, friends and visitors. The rest of the system matters too.

The Sherwood 5000 uses 7189s . That 6BQ5/EL84 "on steroids" allows 20 WPC to be extracted. There is "magic" in several (all?) "12" W. multi-grid power O/P tube types.
The 6V6 family is excellent in both UL and pentode modes, while being superb triode wired.
The EL821/6CH6 is another very nice tube, whose NOS is reasonably affordable.
The Russian 6П15П (6p15p), AKA SV83, is good triode wired, but screen grid fragility makes UL mode highly problematic. Full pentode mode, with regulated g2 B+, is fine.

I own three Sherwood tube amps in the 5000 series. One take 7868s, the next 7591 (?) and another plain old EL 84s. I use the 7868 S5000 II the most. It has been restored the most as well.
The EL-84 was the Beatles tube, used in their Vox amps.
I agree it is a great little tube making sweet music. I worry about them though because they run at full blast as it were. I have gone through some,by comparison I have rarely had to replace a KT-88 or EL34.
The little systems the wife and daughter have use 84's. Wonderful tone.
