Hi, I've been using some metal can 6v6's ( labelled Bell and Howell ) in my Princeton 65 reissue quite happily now for a few months but recently I read that there may be a potential problem regarding grounding on these particular types of tube. Is this correct ? I haven't noticed any weird electrical behaviour and honestly they sound great. Better than most old stock glass ones I've tried. Cheers.
Follow Ups:
It relates to Pin 1. The metal tube uses this pin to ground the case. Glass 6V6GT do not have a connection to pin 1. If your amp is using pin 1 as a idiots tag strip, you could have B+ on the case of the tube. If you touch the tube in operation and you are still alive, there is no harm. I hate it when amp builders use "unused" pins as tag strips. Lazy and dangerous.
OK, Thanks for that. I think I might get the old multimeter out and check there's no high voltage lurking where it's not wanted. Cheers.
I've used metal case tubes in amp, no problems. I really like the metal cased 6SJ7. And the mil spec red RCA 5693.
Well, on my limited experience, I think they sound great too. I wasn't expecting much but to my surprise they sound better then my premium RCA's.
