Just want to mention that the Russian EF86 isn't representative of that type. Mullard and other vintage EF86s from back in the day are far superior. This is worth considering if you're planning to spend real money on substitutes.

Good point! The 717a's were only 14 bucks, so no real problem their. I might try a nice set of Brittish Mullard's, be interested to hear what they sound like. Have also been looking for some Tung Sol 6SJ7GT's (mesh plate) so I don't have to use an adapter, but those have proven somewhat problematic to find.

No such thing . I think you are referring to the screening that surrounds the anode/plate
The best of this genre is the Mullard EF37A but these are getting hard to find and expensive . May not suit your adaptor as these have a topcap grid connection . EF40 are a direct EF86 equivalant and are obtainable and fairly cheap but these have the 8-pin rimlock base . Fnding a suitable adaptor may be an issue
