I am in the market for new tubes for this amp. It has the stock EH EL-34's in it now. I want to replace them with something else. This has to be a one shot deal, I cant afford to tube roll. This amp is not autobias so I have to stick within the parameters of EL-34 or would KT-77's work. The speakers I am using are Monitor Audio Silver 2 that have an 8" woofer. The bass is a little boomy with the EL-34. I have the speakers moved away from any wall about 3 ft. Thanks

for my taste the Gold Lion reissue KT77 had the best balance soundwise in my system, punchy tight bass with slightly sweet mids and sparkling top end, not so good is the price.
The cheaper JJ KT77 were ok but had a gritty edge to them, plus the quad I got displayed erratic bias, then one of them went red-plate.
The EH 6CA7 were also good but can sound slightly sterile.
Right now I am trying out a quad of the TS-EL34B...4 weeks in, can't say I am blown away...giving it another month before I switch back to Svetlana EL34, the stock tubes that came with the amp, which has a warmer sound balance or a slightly softer top end. I got the TS quad for $85., good price.
What is your tube budget.....max $$$$?
I agree with Jim about the KT77 from Genelex. I used them in a Quicksilver Mid-Mono and found them far superior to the JJ 77's. I also enjoyed the SED el 34, but I think they are really hard to find.
Good luck
BTW Jim is fantastic at what he does and I recommend him beyond highly, if that makes sense...
If you want a good well balanced between treble and base with the famous EL-34 midrange magic, at a sane price, I highly recommend a JJ E34L not a spelling error, in blue glass. Yes it matters which color, the blues help in keeping the temp down. A group of Philadelphia audio lovers group did a shootout a number of years back now, with a bunch of EL34s, The only other tube that beat it was Original Mullard EL34s from Great Britain.
The only other tube I can address is the Electro Harmonix 6CA7, but they are very powerful and not as good in the midrange. It has some bang and sizzle, which it appears you don't want.
A good source for JJs is Eurotubes, ultra fast shipping, very good prices and to date no catastrophic failures.
I don't know much about the other current production, such as Mullard Russian, the Gold Lion* KT 77 Russian etc. Or the Chinese black and grey glass tubes.
*I do use the GL KT-88s which I think are superb.
Good Luck!
If you can swing a set of the Genalex KT-77 reissues I think you'll be very pleased. Properly selected KT-77 Genalex will drop right in and bias fine. GREAT tubes!
