I'm aware that the GEC A2900 is considered by some to be one of the finest audio tubes ever. Sonics aside, how durable are they? Do they tend to be electrically robust?
Follow Ups:
I tried perhaps a dozen different tubes in the 12AT7 socket of the phono stage section of the Hovland HP-100 preamplifier. These include
the variants of the 12AT7, such as :
Mullard M8162/CV4024 Mitcham factory with dual support rods and double stage halo getter, gray-coated copper plates military grade,
Telefunken Ecc801s triple mica creased frame grid copper post o getter,
Siemens Ecc801s Bundeswehr bwb military grade with copper grid posts small o getter,
Amperex Bugle Boy 7062 modest pinched waist Heerlen Holland with bugle boy and roman a clef cartoons large O getter with long support rod,
Amperex Holland pinched waist 7062/E180cc Heintz and Kaufman foil D getter, and
Philips Miniwatt 7062/E180cc Holland *SQ* two-star foil D getter.
I settled on the GEC A2900/CV6091 triple mica, double bar square getter, between four and five years ago, and it still seems to be working properly.
I do not know of it being electrically robust, but the prominent sonic characteristic of this tube over all the others is the "blood and guts" sound of this tube.
In your preamp, you decided on the A2900, whereas, in my phono amp, I preferred the Tele ECC801S. With SS, you are locked in to the designer's choices. Ok, if you were really serious you could remove the transistor and put in a different brand but how much of a hassle is that to change an active device. cheers, Dak
Posters use the often heard caveat, "Your mileage may vary."
I believe that the "sound" of a vacuum tube depends on the circuit in which it is placed and its neighboring tubes. I also believe that the designer/manufacturer tweaks the circuit, using a certain stock tube. Tube enthusiasts may stray from the stock tube parameters, but should not stray too far. This quandary is the elation and the bane of vacuum tube rollers. My condolences if you are one of them.
That way YMMNV, your mileage may Not vary.
Condolences???
Who died? I don't want or need anyone's condolences.
Maybe, you need a different hobby if you feel that disturbed if someone uses a Tele instead of a GEC in a phono preamp. YMMV, Dak

They are a military tube that is built for long life and reliability. I believe they are a "computer" tube. I use 1 in my phono preamp in the 12at7 slot. As is with most of the military type tubes they are very neutral. cheers, dak
These are very reliable valves but getting expensive now.

Hey Frostbite, do you have a line on some? you mind sharing the particulars?

So, they would probably charge an extra fitty bucks for that. Lord knows what they would charge if it had a "pinched waste". Just joking, it never had a pinched version.
Somebody knows....
These were fancy 12AT7s that's about all I heard. I had some, They were good but not fantastic tubes. When they came out in quantity, a few years ago, the tube buying public was advised by the tube know it alls, that there were not a good, as their GEC heritage suggested. I had a couple but can't seem to find them now.
I will let you in on a little secret now that I got a few pairs. The Madrid Philips tubes branded as Marconis made in the 1960s are really good IMHO. These are not RCAs relabeled like the Canadian tubes. No financial interest in this dealer etc. etc.
