Did Bendix ever make a 6SN7? I bought one on Fleabay this past week. I didn't think I would win with the min. bid of $9.95 but did. When I got it, it had # 280 on the base which means (EIA) Raytheon made it. I'm pretty sure it must have given the plate structure and indifference. It is also been used, no question about that. The surprising part of this is that it's sounds very good, really. That doesn't make the tubee a Bendix product but it's not a total waste. I already won too many Raytheon 6SN7s so I'll have to save this one, just like all the others, I can't seem to part with LOL.

Yes- same print on tube base, plate structure is the same, the price however was very different.
EIA code 280 = Raytheon
There were tubes labeled Bendix that weren't the famous Bendix Red Bank tubes. They were mostly labeled "Bendix Radio", and usually were rebrands from other makers. Only the name is the same on these, they are by NO means equivalent to the Eatontown, NJ made Red Bank tubes.BTW, while the 5692 and other red base RCAs are nice tubes - don't put them in the same class as the Red Bank tubes. A real Red Bank tube will take a pounding that would leave the RCA just a burnt smoking cinder.
If you'd like to learn the real story about Bendix and Red Bank tubes get Charles Hansen's nice little book "A History of Bendix Red Bank Tubes" if you can find one. It was published by Audio Amateur - and NO, you can't have mine!

I've tried the Bendix Red Bank 6106 -- a direct replacement for the 5Y3. I thought it was a superb rectifier and better than any other 5Y3.Am I remembering this correctly -- that some of the Bendix Red Bank versions of popular tubes are not direct replacements as their pin configurations are non-standard?
I've never located the Hansen book despite some effort, but Eric Barbour wrote an article in Vacuum Tube Valley about the Bendix Red Bank tubes. It's in issue #5 if you have your CD handy -- or here:

I am using it on my single ended RH 6V6/6L6 amp. Sometimes I will even use my 5992 with the 6106. The 5992 is also a good sounding but I did not really try to compare the sound of it versus my other 6v6. But on top of that the Bendix 5992 is even more impressive looking than the 6106. Cheers, Dak

If you are going survive the accelerations of a missile launch you better be tough. ;~)

It is probably a rebrand. AFAIK, Bendix made no 6sn7. I am pretty certain that Bendix was a relative late comer to the tube manufacturing biz and the 6sn7 was made back in the 1940s late 30s? cheers, Dak
6SN7type does go back to the 40's, but variants were still made into the 70's (6SN7GTA, GTB, etc)
My point to be more specific is that since there were many manufacturers producing the 6sn7 during the 50s when Bendix started manufacturing their special "red bank" tubes , it would seem unlikely that they would develop their own milspec, ultra reliable version. RCA had already cornered that market with their 5692. Which is my favorite 6sn7 type, but that is a different discussion. cheers, Dak
Yeah. Bendix Red Bank came into existence to make tubes for ICBM use. Post WW2. High G loads, temp extremes, reliability.
I no of no Bendix made tube pre-WW2.
Agree. AFAIK, Bendix Red Bank only made tubes for military or industrial applications. All the ones I've seen have mil spec designations --- unless rebranded.
They did make a 6080wb that was the equivalent of a consumer 6080. Very impressive construction but after a listen in a woo head amp it is best left to icbm :^).
I find that some of these super-tough mil spec tubes need a LOT of break-in, before sounding ok. The 6080W can make a great guitar amp tube.
Thanks for the responses. Looks like I have some reading to do.
I own the equivalent to the 6AQ5ss or it's type somewhere. I bought them in a lot of tubes. They have thick ceramic "micas" and thick glass, I was told I could build an amp with them as 6AQ5s, never tried.
The headphone people do indeed covet the 6080 and I am hoping to get some of those some day.
