I'll keep an ear out for noise nasties down the road.

Henry, please let us know how they perform over the longer haul. The ones I had issue with were during that same time period when Jim McShane was having so much trouble with JJ reliability in general. Mine didn't last but about two weeks before they went hissy. It may have been more an overall production QC issue than anything related to the steel pin version vs. gold ones. I got rid of my steel ones and have only gold ones now, and as I said, they've been perfect.

I like the midrange lushness of the JJs but not the top end where the EH's shine.

Henry,
I was hacking around at the Tube Depot this morning doing some window shopping. I happened on their "Tube Comparison Tool" and clicked. They post some stats on how the various tubes they sell test. They have stats there for both the gold and steel versions of the JJ 6922, as well as others. Interesting point is that there is a measured difference between those two. The stats for the steel vs. gold are the same for all categories except for sensitivity. The gold versions produce a bit more current with the same input voltage. Not a huge difference, but a difference. I'm only guessing, but I suspect the two versions are identical except that the gold ones are selected at the factory based on some performance test characteristics and given the gold platting. I may have to break down and order some more of the steel ones and do my own compare.
Best,
Mike
