I was monitoring an auction for 6900 tubes on epay this past weekend and the end prices are pretty high. The good deal was a set of 4 for 1100.00! Individual tubes were going for 400. That is about an equivalent increase in price from the original price of a WE 300B to what it is now. The seller is going to have a very merry Christmas.
Funny thing in my MFA amp I preferred the sound of the Amperex 7119 to the Bendix 6900. cheers, Dak

I think it was around 2004 or so when I was going through my Dynaco phase. The original MKIIs that I was gathering were coming with steel bottom EL34s. As fate would have it the Japanese were in a frenzy to buy these. I was selling the tubes out of the MKIIs around $500 a pair.
Paid for the amp, restoration upgrade kits and a set of KT-88s.
About 15 maybe 20 years ago I found a supplier that was unloading them for 20 bucks apiece. They were beautiful Tung Sol branded with gold pins. They are an extremely high quality tube, I wonder what it would cost to make something like that today?
I am thinking about making a KT88 SE amp with a 5687 driver tube where I can test the sound quality of the 5687 more easily. Cheers, Dak
I prefer the sound of several other 5687 types to 6900. 7119 Amperex made in Holland is one. Early 60's RCA 5687 is another.
But is this surprising? Not really. Rarity of 6900 creates demand as much or more than sonics I think.
Over time the challenge of current tube making operations will be to match the quality from 60 years ago in post WWII 9-pin button base tubes.
I seriously wonder if the quality of peak of production can ever be matched.
I think the "problem" with 6900s is the tendency to equate them with 5687 and 7119, run them at similar voltage/current/watts, and then say that they don't measure up to their cost factor. They in fact seem to have been built for much more stress than a 5687 or 7119, more current, in any case, and I imagine they may really excel if pushed harder than one would typically push a 5687 or 7119. Most high Gm tubes in my experience don't sound so great if not supplied with sufficient current. (Years ago, I bought 16 of the 6900s at one fell swoop, when they were not cheap but at least not yet ridiculous in cost. I use them at the front end of my mono block tube amps, in a dual-differential cascode. Pretty nice, I'd say.)

Yes, but they're the ticket if you want your missile guidance system to survive launch accelerations.

Watch what you say! You just made Big Brother's watch list! Well, got to go and add more tin foil to my anti big brother aluminum foil cap. cheers, Dak
