Favorite 6SN7? is bound to get you at least a hundred opinions. Vintage tubes would be the National Union GG (nearly impossible to find), the '52 Sylvania "Bad Boys"' (difficult to find), and the TungSol round-plate (expensive to find). New tubes is either the current Russian version or the current Chinese version. Either way, expect to pay $'s for the best.
Follow Ups:
Opus 33 1/3
They may be scarcee I agree but they do come around. I own a pair just because I decided to collect (hoard) 6SN7s. They are soft and mellow, as far a microphonics goes I agree with Jim McShane, unless you uintend on hitting your tube while playing or it feedsback, don't worry about it. Microphonics may actually add a dimension to the sound which gives it more fullness and soundstage.
I second the suggestion that A Sylvania W or very early
GT no A or B are superb all around 6SN7s IMO. As suggested you can still find short bottle Ws at reasonable prices, if money no object then Tall bottle and the supposed best are the rare and elusive metal base. Another choice would be an immaculate bottom getter GT including Bad Boys are the tubes to try. There was a guy in our audio group who had Aesthetic gear, who bought tubes from Vintage Tubes Services. What did VTS recommend and send him, Sylvania but get this early GTB. BTW the early GTA with heavy "chrome" has the same plate structure as the Ws.
Another all around tube prized by many is indeed the Tung Sol round plate in black glass. Be careful I have bought 3 or 4 which sounded like ordinary cheap stuff. The pairs that are good however are very good thus the high prices, again make sure it is a clean tube.
People think that the RCA is a very good tube, saying full rich lush midrange. I never got that impression,to me they are ordinary, yuou might like them.
If you are a bass aficionado then the Ken Rad GT is the one you want.
I have not heard a Russian tube I liked so I can't give you advice.
If you are wealthy, the true top of the toppers is the GEC MOV B65, there has been a few for sale on an auction site, but the price might give you a nose bleed.
Close European tubes are the ECC33 and ECC32, I have both, but I am tired of writing so read about them elsewhere. Good Luck
email me if you want if you want.
Steve
Go to Upscale audio and buy the 1960's Russian 6H8C/6SN7GT. Best 6SN7, I or many friends I have recommended it to, have ever heard

Only Upscale has the tube I recommended. I have never had any problem with them
