A bonus day!
I tried the RCA 5963 in my VTA ST-70. Very nice indeed! A tad laid back in the treble but NOT!! rolled off. Just less then the GE that was in there. A fuller bolder mid and bass. Over all I like it VERY much.

I agree with Eli, RCA tubes from the 50s and 60s are pretty much all very good. In fact, you could say the same of GE and Sylvania as well. Vintage U.S. tubes rock and are fully competitive with the fancy ass Mullards, Telefunkins, and Siemens from Europe. Of course this is a very general statement, there are some great European tubes. But U.S. tubes from this era are still easy to find and relatively affordable, particularly small signal tubes. I would rather have one of these than a "premium" new production tube for about the same money. Get them while you can. One day new production will be the only game in town.
Enjoy the roll!
I thought the VTA ST-70 was designed for 12at7's?
The 5963 is a 12au7.

"Still Working the Problem"
It was, at one point. That's the circuit that won the Glass Audio ST-70 shootout way back when, from what I understand
Many felt the AT had too much gain, and came up with mods to the circuit, so it would work with AU.
VTA eventually started offering it with the option of the board being configured for one tube or the other. I don't keep up with what they're offering now. There wasn't much joy in the 12AU7 version for me, and I could never get a straight answer regarding proper circuit voltages.

The use of tube types not intended by the manufacturer, is now an acceptable segment in the hobby. In fact you can buy an adapter for most any kind of tube. The adapter makers do insist on tubes that are vaguely compatible sort of anyway, to avoid total nuclear fusion in your now sorry amp! I have been tempted myself. I like the big tone of the 6SN7 and have a nice collection of them to try out. I wonder what a given amp will sound like if the 6SN7 can be employed.
