How do you get to your conclusion? Do you use reference tracks? If you're happy with the sound that's good, some people are never happy - they'll change the whole system and spend megabucks. Depends what you want to achieve.
Follow Ups:
That is right. Reference tracks or albums/CD's.
I find that it is easier to discern the attributes of a tube (or gear, for that matter) by living with the previous tube for a week or two and then the new tube for a like time frame - using the same source and record, CD etc.
The best overall sound is the aim. If I find myself getting into the music and tapping my foot, that is a good thing.
How does your tapwater taste? Go to Safeway buy Fiji, Smart, San Pellegrino, , and whatever else they're selling - even distilled water. Then get as many glasses (this is important - they must all be exactly the same) and pour them and taste them - If the water tastes the same you're lucky, tube rolling wont make a difference either...
Also, I did the water taste test three years ago, and Fiji water is the clear winner.
A lot of people (maybe most) don't trust their senses. I'm often shocked at what people find appealing, they don't have a clue. It was an analogy, lighten up.
I see that your an audiophile and a wine connoisseur. If I may ask - What is the difference between sampling different tubes and tasting different Bordeaux wines?
Does the 2003 Rothschild taste just a little bit like hypocrisy?
Just saying...
Good that you brought the wine thingy up. The theory is if you've trained yourself (water is a cheap way) to tell the difference between A, B, C etc. (the more the merrier)and know why they are different this philosophy will apply to the other senses as well.
I can't afford to drink good Bordeaux's just like I can't afford $2,500 IC's. If you asked me what I thought I would say nice wine...sit down and have some.
My point is there has to be some discernable difference between the tubes that you need to figure out.
Not sure why I'm a hypocrite?
While an interesting analogy, I don't think I agree with your premise. Tasting water involves the water and your taste buds. Much less complexity compared to the myriad of options of (for example) power amplifiers, each may have unique circuitry and sensitivities to power cords, power tubes, driver tubes, rectifiers etc. that exponentially increases the variables.
From a distance, it is an effective analogy, but when you shine a light on it the analogy falls. Like comparing a simple melody to a symphony...we have moved on a simile now.
I'm trying to strip away the BS that is involved with analyzing(anything). If you can focus the sense you are using - (I believe it doesn't matter) because you are ultimately using the same processor. I have found most people don't know how to analyze something, their fall back (although they will never admit to it) is to a. go with what others think b. it must be good because it costs a lot.
I go back to water because if you can't tell the difference (and analyze what it is) between 5 different glasses of water you can't tell the difference between most things.
Of course if you have been dealing with tubes most of your life and the tube Zen master was your teacher you will know. My theory is more of a life's philosophy - A Zen master is not always available...
There is a time for simplicity and a time for critical analytics - and all increments in between the two. Knowing the right time, and degree for each is the key.
I am hoping that one would not need a Zen tube master to tell you that a Tung Sol round plate 6SN7 sounds better than a Sovtek 6SN7.
Man, find a hobby.
