In Reply to: RE: See if Upscale Audio still has higher graded Matsushita 7dj8's... posted by DeKay on September 11, 2015 at 18:15:08
I purchased six of these from Upscale. Five of the six were too noisy even though they were graded A for noise. One was so microphonic (also graded A) that it would go off when speaking. Upscale would not respond to any of my requests for replacement or refund. I have filed a dispute with Visa which Upscale is fighting.
I ended up with Telefunken branded heavily burned in and tested JJs which sound much better, are very quiet and so far seem to be reliable. Purchased from Tube Depot.

Did you use the 7dj8's in the same gear?
Also, what happened with the GL's (never saw a follow up)?
Just wondering if it's the tubes, or the gear you are using them in.
As Far as Upscale not honoring their return policy, per your comment, that's a different matter.
There are gobs of positive online reviews of the tubes (some from AR owners/users).
I have never done business with Upscale (tried once and decided I did not care for the owner), so you have considerably more knowledge/experience in this respect.
The GL 6922s failed prematurely. They worked fine when first installed. This was a manufacturing issue not a dealer issue. Even though they failed after any reasonable return period, Jim Mcshane replaced then. I've been buying tubes most of my life and from just about every vendor. Never had trouble with anyone except Upscale. For customer service Jim Mcshane would be the best.
In this case, the tubes from Upscale are bad right out of the box (5 out of 6).
The component is the Herron VTSP-2A (just upgraded to 3A), about as easy on tubes as you can get. The tubes run at about 1/10th of max plate dissipation. The DC filament voltage is set to 5.8Vdc to extend tube life and minimize noise. The unit powers up for a minute, slowly ramping up filament voltage and then applying B+ after the tubes are fully warmed up. Many other brands of tubes have been used in this unit, both new and NOS in the 15+ years that I've owned it without issue.
So,in this case, it's a problem with a bad vendor sending me bad tubes and then refusing to upgrade, exchange or provide a refund. In the case of the GL 6922, it was a case of tubes failing prematurely and a dealer that goes above and beyond to provide exceptional customer service.
