I am using vintage GE 12Au7's in my Latino driver board. And I have NO complaints. However while working on my Heathkit OL-1 oscilloscope I noticed it had 4 original (circa 1954-1956) RCA 5963's. These are also recommended tubes for the ST-70 I use.
Are they any good and worth trying?????

The RCA 5963 is a pretty good tube, esp, the black plates. You might also like the 5814 which is built to handle more vibration so they are less microphonic. They are all good but eventually went back to Tele's. cheers, Dak
I very much like the 5963 as a replacement for the 12AU7, at least in my two pieces of equipment that utilize such (Mcintosh MC240 and PrimaLuna Integrated). My favorite is a Raytheon CK5963 followed by the black plate RCA.
Enjoy
I agree with Sondek on the JJ's but get them from a trusted dealer. You won't go wrong with any of the Gold Lion re-issues. I got a pair of the KT-77's from Jim and like them. I also have JJ KT77's and have had no issues. They are a bit darker than the GL's. Tungsram ECC82's are nice linear tubes, still affordable and last. The choice of coupling caps and input tubes usually has more sonic impact that output tubes. Bob has a forum and I'd see what others like for 12AU7's. If someone there has the same or similar speaker that would be a big help.Enjoy your amp!

6dj8s, 12AT7, 12Ay7, 12BH7, and 6CG7.IMO no 12AU7 is a good audio valve unless it's in gain-less follower mode.
A good and cheap buffer? Yes.

They are worth trying - but be aware that 5963s tend to be excessively microphonic. So listen for any issues.
Good luck!
How are the GE 12AU7's?
SHould I be trying something else in there?
Also what EL34's do you recommend? I have no idea what ones come with the kit. THey do sound very nice. But you know how it is with tubes - try - try - try!
Or should I try KT66's. My goal is purely musical not analytical.

Charles,
I'm not aware of the 12AU7 GEs having a microphonics issue. Sonically - they're good, but not as good as some others. But I'd try them and try the 5963s too - you might have good ones!
Which EL34s? Genalex KT-77s, no question. Amazing tube, great tone and problem-free. They are considered by many to sound like a cross between an EL34 and a 6L6.
Try the JJ ECC802s. Long plates, spiral filaments. Very nice sounding tube ... for a 12AU7 that is.
