I think we are quite aware that there is such a notion... But it is not the only one out there.

I used to believe that the person undergoes break-in rather than the parts.
That is , until I built a very expensive 300b amp with all new parts. The first few weeks I thought that there was something wrong with the amp. It had very pronounced and grating highs. After about two weeks, the amps smoothed out and became listenable. To this day, it is the most pronounced change in sound I have experienced, and that was 20 years ago.
...that started its life listenable, but became irritating after 200 hours?
I think it all gets explained with some very simple psychology. I remember when I got my first crown - it really drove me nuts for a few days, then I forgot about it. The analogy with your example should generate some curiosity - don't you think so?
I had a PP EL34 amp that was dynamic and rough
for the first 100 hours and then it was awesome.
But that only lasted a few days then it went
more boring as time went on until I sold it.
I think people like talking about victories
rather than the failures along the way.
