Is there an advantage(s)to use matched output tubes in an amp where the bias can be individually adjusted for each output tube? I am assuming the matched tubes would be closely matched under normal operating voltages.
Follow Ups:
Matched transconductance gives you better AC balance between the output tubes.
Adjustable fixed bias for each tube gives you good DC balance between the output tubes.
Thanks, I was questioning because vintage kits rarely if ever supplied matched pairs of output tubes, nor mentioned replacing output tubes with matched pairs in their manuals. Today many owners of tube amps obsess about matching everything as closely as possible for best potential performance.
If you went to a drug store back in the day to buy a new tube for your amplifier, but you were lead to believe that you absolutely had to have a transconductance matched pair, where would you get them?
You would need to obtain them from the military or a university laboratory at that point, which was pretty difficult.
The internet now affords us such luxuries.
