After trying a whole lot of tubes, I settled on the Telefunken E88CC which I really liked. But I got curious about the Tele ECC88 and it turns out I like it even more. Should I keep digging through the various Tele permutations or am I unlikely to find one I like as well as these?
Follow Ups:
All the Telefunken versions of this tube family are pretty good. I prefer the ECC88 as well in my ARC phonostage. The gold pin E88CC is a bit darker sounding and less open to me. In general I find the ECC88/6DJ8 versions of this family sound better than the voltage uprated E88CC/6922 versions, the main exceptions being the white label early Amperex 6922 and all the pinch waist Amperex tubes. Those are killer tubes.
Enjoy the roll!
It was a near toss up for me too. Imaging, for me they're dead even. Tone, the 6dj8 wins. Frequency extension and resolution, the 6922 wins. In my situation I prefer the 6922 over the 6dj8, but only by the smallest margin. The tonal tradeoff is so small for the gain in freq and resolution that the 6922 wins the prize for me. Interestingly though, I feel exactly the opposite when Amperex is the subject.
You can dig until you are broke and nuts. O.K. if you are here you are nuts already. If you are very pleased with the sound you have just get a spare tube or two. Other variation may be different but perhaps not better. Been there done that got a T-shirt. My 2 cents.
Alternatively, wait a few months before trying something else. By then you will be thoroughly acquainted with what you have and won't be confused by too much 'candy'. My 3 cents.
