I put the el34's back in and both light up fine. Could the white smoke been gas from the kt77 as the plastic bass broke.

Rotated one pin to the left, you would have fed your 6.3 volt heater with 300 volts which would have been quite impressive. This would put big stress on your cathode resistor, rectifier, transformer, etc. for the few seconds the heater lasted before failing. That could be the source of your smoke.
Rotated one pin the other way, you would have put B+ on the screen and probably not caused any damage.

Thanks for the info.it appears to be working fine when I turned it back on after replacing the tubes.no more smoke which led me to believe it was tube gas when the base of the tube broke. Any way of telling if there is permanent damage as I only put it on for a short period of time.
