OTOH, on the whole I've always been happier with higher eff/lower powered solutions, than with speakers that need a lot of power to sound good.
Follow Ups:
I may be in the minority BUT ..
I have the complete opposite opinion.
I have yet to hear a high eff speaker that
I could stand for any amount of time.
Ranging from just irritating to
me screaming from the room in pain.
The spikey response drives me nuts.
Especially Fostex drivers!!!

I've often thought the 'flea powered amp and super efficient speaker' people are crazy.
But I've not had the opportunity to hear really good systems like that, so for now it's just a suspicion.

The best I have heard was the Avantgarde
which is tolerable but short term only.

IME, the subtleties of flea-power amps are much more apparent with headphones. Even the best speakers are usually "muddied" by the listening environment to an extent that masks the lower-level nuances produced by these amps. It's extremely difficult to beat the SE EL84 or 6V6 with a near-direct path to the ears. :)

The Sound Quest SQ84-V2. Use it to run my HD800's.
I have a house full of expensive speakers but that's the best sound in the house.
I got some NOS 6V6's from Upscale Audio. System sounds wonderful.

Same here, I'm also using SE 6V6 (self-designed). My lower-tier Grados sound really terrific with this amp, there's clearly some level of synergy taking place. I'm working on an all-triode design at the moment, but I have no idea yet what to expect in terms of sonic differences. It will definitely be hard to beat the dynamics and clarity of the 6V6s.
