What would your preference be - an amp that runs EL34's or KT88's?

I DIYed a SEUL integrated amplifier, that can handle both 6L6 and EL34 tubes.
In my system, I prefer the EL34 tubes.....so far

I still learn towards the 6l6/kt66 sound although lately I have really enjoyed premium kt88s from China. KT77 sound nice also. EL34 not really in the running in my amp, just too coloured for me, even the fabled Mullards.
My amp is a Rogue Stereo 90 modified.
I'll bite..Haven't figured out yet what I think sounds the most realistic. The PL HP hasn't had the KT150 yet. At $100 a pop, not on the short list.
.
So far, I tried the 34's/77 and 88's. prefer KT77
These are the flavor of the moment. 6l6g at least in my rig, a smidge
"drier" presentation, which to my ears, sounds more "real" to me.
The 6L6 may stay in for awhile.
The speakers you plan on using govern the electronics you buy. Amps and speakers form an "organic" whole and really can't be discussed in isolation.
What speakers do you have?

Harbeth P3ESR's and original Quads.

EL-34
You will have enough for both speakers-
I have been using an RM-9 for the past 25 years and though I have heard the 6550s and KT-88s, I am still using the EL-34s, and that is my spare set-
Happy Listening
A pair of 'lowly' SE84Bs in the late 90s turned me on to the first watt philosophy. A simply magical sounding pair of amplifiers (see link), if you have reasonable efficiency (say above 90dB) and don't listen at head banging levels. Seriously, you will learn a lot about recordings listening this way. Decware also makes a some amps which use EL34s, but I find the EL84 sound super fast and airy...addictive.
His Harbeth speakers' sensitivity is in the low 80s. Definitely NOT the sort of thing to mate to a DECWARE SE84.

OTOH, on the whole I've always been happier with higher eff/lower powered solutions, than with speakers that need a lot of power to sound good.
I may be in the minority BUT ..
I have the complete opposite opinion.
I have yet to hear a high eff speaker that
I could stand for any amount of time.
Ranging from just irritating to
me screaming from the room in pain.
The spikey response drives me nuts.
Especially Fostex drivers!!!

I've often thought the 'flea powered amp and super efficient speaker' people are crazy.
But I've not had the opportunity to hear really good systems like that, so for now it's just a suspicion.

The best I have heard was the Avantgarde
which is tolerable but short term only.

IME, the subtleties of flea-power amps are much more apparent with headphones. Even the best speakers are usually "muddied" by the listening environment to an extent that masks the lower-level nuances produced by these amps. It's extremely difficult to beat the SE EL84 or 6V6 with a near-direct path to the ears. :)

The Sound Quest SQ84-V2. Use it to run my HD800's.
I have a house full of expensive speakers but that's the best sound in the house.
I got some NOS 6V6's from Upscale Audio. System sounds wonderful.

Same here, I'm also using SE 6V6 (self-designed). My lower-tier Grados sound really terrific with this amp, there's clearly some level of synergy taking place. I'm working on an all-triode design at the moment, but I have no idea yet what to expect in terms of sonic differences. It will definitely be hard to beat the dynamics and clarity of the 6V6s.

The nominal impedance of the P3ESRs is 6 Ω, not 16 Ω. They should be OK on the 4 Ω taps of a refurbed Cit. 5. Notice the limited power handling capability. You might damage them with the 60+ WPC KT88 amps produce.
I hope you are planning on adding a powered subwoofer to the P3ESRs. 3 dB. down at 75 Hz. is (IMO) unsatisfactory.
