My $.02 cents, run a proper setup. Find a used PL Dialoge 3 pre or save a few more bucks and live w/ o a remote - prologue 3 pre.
Perhaps your current setup is just not optimal for the amp.
I'm PL fan, many years of troublefree use. That amp will sound great stock, once mated with the line stage. You don't need fancy cables, NOS tubes for it to sound nice. But, youre HERE, so never mind.

I kinda agree with you but there are some problems with that. Due to the sad state of affairs with high end audio shops in today's market I was not able to do an audition with the PL power amp in my home system before the purchase. In addition the local shop here had an integrated PL and the sales person convinced me that the preamp section did not make a difference in sound for the PL. And they had no other PL in stock. I relied on many reputable reviews, not one of them mentioned to make sure to match and swap out all components in order to make the PL sound great.
While waiting on the Mullards 12ax7 to arrive, I have made some adjustments. Added back in Cal Audiolabs Icon MkII cd player, Schiit Sys passive preamp, Straight Wire interconnects. On the Mac Mini/DragonFly changed from Audirvana to JRiver. I'm glad to say that these have made some very positive changes to the sound quality.

Can you go to the shop and get them to let you take the integrated home?
A call to Kevin Deal at Upscale would clear the air and he can recommend tubes for your rig.
Yeah, I agree taking a test drive when possible. As a "seasoned" owner of the brand, you're not risking any sort of compatibility issue, and will hear the amp in its best light.
Having heard plenty of uber rigs the past 40 years, cost/ performance ratio with the PL gear
Is tough to beat.
I have the Dialogue Premium HP. It easily makes any source sound it's best.
What I mean by this is your amplification would be "set and forget" and blame your setup, sources, cabling and everything else we suggest here.
