Guys- Looking for the best 6sn7 for my Topaz SET amp- Using the GE 211 tubes and Wyetech Ruby pre- Also where is the best place to get the "real" version- thanks
Follow Ups:
Howdy Bebop86. Have yet to hear the Wyetech's but have heard their components are superb. Should you get the urge to use 5962s's or 6SN7GT's be sure to check with Wyetech if they will work without issue in your amp. Some amps don't deal well with their lower plate voltage ratings relative to the later 6SN7GTA & GTB versions. And if you call Wyetech, they might have good suggestions on which tubes to use.
I'd go to Upscale Audio for NOS tubes. Many 6sn7's available there.
Guys thanks for the help- I am running these electronics with the Classic Audio T1.4 horn speakers if that helps- As far as budget doesn't matter( well maybe a little) just want to get the best sound I can- I like a very natural warm sound as I listen mostly to female voices- thanks for all the advice-
If warmth is what you're after, and listen to mostly female vocal, I'd put the RCA VT-231 at the top of my list. It excels in that part of the audio spectrum and has a warm, intimate sound. If top and bottom extension is desired, then look elsewhere, but the RCA is my hands-down favorite for small acoustic jazz ensembles.
I agree the RCA VT231 is an excellent choice as is the RCA GT grey glass which some call lush! There is a tendency to mix up the graphite shaded glass RCA GT with the more opaque grey glass, while good, I don't think they are equivalent.

Yep, I probably should've made that distinction between the black and the gray. The gray is the better of the two IMO. I still have one pair of them in my stash that I got from Neville Keatley, the guy that introduced us to the '52 Bad Boys, although it wasn't Neville that hung that name on them. I no longer have the amp that used 6SN7's and I probably should pass them on to somebody that can use them one these days. The funny part now, looking back, is that Neville charged me 50% more for the RCA's than he did for the '52 Syls that I bought from him. Pretty sure that price relationship is completely upside down today. The '52 are worth a lot more than the RCA's.
1950's Russian 6H8C/6SN7GT still available at Upscale Audio I think

There are a multitude of 6SN7s which will work in your zmp. What kind of sound signature are you looking for. The various 6SN7s each have their own sound. If you simply want one which will be very reliable with a guarantee and of certain provenance by current production. Jim McShane can provide you with a well screened tube.
If you are thinking of NOS or OS, there are many to consider.
Please tell us what sound you hope to attain.
As a starting suggestion I will vet the 6SN7W by Sylvania.
My favorite 6SN7 for balanced upper and lower sound which is detailed and generally produces a very 3D soundstage with crystalline holographic imagery, while maintaining accurate reproduction, is the Sylvania W. The Tall metal based tubes are the most desirable and most expensive. In my Experience the same sound can be had with less rare variants. These are were also the earliest GTs (40s) with a top getter and extensive flashing covering a large amount of the tube, thus they acquired the nick name chrome domes but these are the real ones, the nick name is widely misused. They are never inexpensive but can be had at sane prices.
That is just one example, you really need to help guide us. The type of sound you are aiming for and any other parameters that are important to you, like your projected budget for them.
Looking forward to your response-
Steve
That would depend partially on the plate voltage of the driver for your amp. 6SN7A and 6SN7B have higher plate voltages than the 6SN7GT, WGT, and W models. Read your manual. Otherwise, the 6SN7GT, WGT and W you pick is pretty much personal and how much the driver influences the sound you hear, which also depends (even more) on how the driver is coupled to the power tubes and the quality of the output transformers.
The RCA 6SN7GT is the most colored; the 6SN7W probably the most neutral. Everything else is in between...if you can even hear it in your amplifier.
Asking for the best 6sn7 is like asking what is the best car or best type of woman. Ask 5 people and you will get 5 different answers. Your amp and pre are very revealing high quality electronics. They deserve the best tubes you can feed them.
That said I can recommend the following types of 6sn7 as among the best tubes of this type:
Sylvania 6sn7W (any of the three types)
Sylvania 3 hole T plate bottom getter "bad boys"
Tung Sol black glass round plate
RCA VT231 grey glass
Russian metal base "hole plate" 1578
Raytheon 6sn7WGT
Brimar black glass
Sylvania VT 231
There are many other good ones as well. Many also love the Ken Rad black glass, Sylvania 6sn7GTA chrome tops, GE 6sn7GTA, Tung Sol 6sn7GTB tall boys, RCA/GE/CBS 5692, etc. The only way to find out which is best in your amp is to try some. It is worth building up a stash of 6sn7 pairs, they last a very long time and you can always resell what you don't like.
Enjoy the roll!
Mendel you still managed to mention most of what someone might find and want to try, albeit a fairly long list.
BTW the Brimar Black glass you listed are called CV1988s 6SN7GTYs.
